De Fermo Prologo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2017Regular price $49.00 Save $-49.00
100% Montepulciano. Prologo was De Fermo's first wine, hence the "prologue" moniker, in the 2010 vintage. It is sourced from the estate's 11 hectares of certified-biodynamic vines. They are hand-harvested and the bunches destemmed, crushed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and no temperature control in concrete tank. Maceration last 2-3 weeks, while the fermentation goes on for a leisurely month or two.
The wine is aged in large oak botti for up to a year and half and is bottled without fining or filtering or additional sulfur (minimal amounts are used at racking only).
De Fermo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Concreto 2019Regular price $22.00 Save $-22.00
100% Montepulciano. The Concrete white and red are newer bottlings for this young winery. The Rosso fruit is harvested earlier for freshness from among De Fermo's 11 hectares of certified-biodynamic Montepulciano vine (the riper fruit from later harvest goes into the traditional rosato Le Cince Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Superiore and the long-aged Prologo DOC Montepulciano d'Abruzzo). The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, crushed and macerated for only 4-5 days, with the goal of a younger-drinking version of this very tannic grape in mind.
Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and no temperature control. The wine is aged in concrete tanks--hence the very literal name of the wine--for up to a year and bottled without fining or filtering; sulfur is used judiciously during racking but never at bottling. Since the wine is classified simply as Vino Rosso, the only geographical indicator on the bottle is "L.A." for the locale of Loreto Apruntino.

Fresh and savory, this opens with aromas of dark berry, ground cooking spice and whiff of chopped herb. The vibrant palate doles out juicy black cherry, clove, star anise and blood orange accompanied by racy acidity.
This historic G.B Burlotto estate, located in the commune of Verduno in the Barolo DOCG, was established by Giovan Battista Burlotto, il Commendatore, in the mid-18th century, during whic time it earned the distinguished titles of “Supplier to the Savoy Royal Household” and “The Only Supplier to the Duke of Abruzzi’s Artic Expedition to the North Pole.” Burlotto distinguished himself by introducing the practice of selling bottled wine bearing his estate’s name (in the manner of French châteaux) at a time when it was customary practice to sell wine in cask. It is speculated that the Savoy court’s regard for the wines of Verduno enabled such formidable innovation, though Burlotto’s wines were lauded on the international scene as well.

Vinous 90 points - Bright red. Nuanced aromas of red berries, flowers and herbs, plus a hint of iron. Flinty in the mouth too, with a loamy element further complicating red cherry and berry flavors. Closes with nice persistence and repeating floral flavors
Argiano is one of the most important estates in Montalcino. It is located in the southwest quadrant and sees most of its vineyards at 300 meters above sea level, on a flat plateau with beautiful views and a protected microclimate. The Amiata mountain in the distance blocks much of the incoming bad weather. One area of the estate has heavy clay soils. International grapes are planted here. Sangiovese (clone M1) is also planted here in part. Other Sangiovese vines make their home in light, calcareous soils that help enhance aromas.
