From our friend and wine expert Charles Antin comes his second vintage of the best California Chardonnay for less than $40. Charles works with top vineyard sites and selects the best three barrels from the harvest. This wine is all about Balance. Ripe golden apples are supported by a beautiful backbone of acidity and wrapped in notes of peach compote, fresh lemon meringue, limestone, allspice, cardamom, and a deliciously long finish. “Pure and refined, this white shows layers of flint, verbena and tangerine that are driven by vibrant acidity and savory minerality. Complex and intense, with a long, zesty finish. Drink now through 2028.”
Domaine Martin, a traditional and respected domaine located in the grand terroir of Chavignol, is owned and run by Pierre Martin. After working alongside his father, Yves, he started his own domaine from a scant 4 ha of vines in the best village of Sancerre, Chavignol. The vines are raised using sustainable agriculture, using absolutely no herbicides or pesticides. The soil found in these beautiful, high altitude vineyards are a mixture of caillottes (stony, chalky pebbles) and terres blanches (a mixture of clay and limestone). The average age of his vines are 35+ years old. All vinification is done in temperature controlled stainless steel tank, with 4-6 month aging on fine lees with minimal batonnage.

Catherine and Pierre Breton are the real life bon vivants vignerons of lore. They are passionate about what they do, they enjoy sharing it with others, and they entertain with generosity and charm. That they make great wine with such integrity makes our appreciation of them complete. The Bretons farm eleven hectares of vines just east of Bourgueil in the village of Restigné. They produce Chinon and Bourgueil, as well as a bit of Vouvray, creating honest wines for both early consumption and longer aging. The Bretons first introduced biodynamic practices into their viticulture in 1994, just after receiving their organic certification in 1991. Recently, they started the three-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. In fact, they have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic viticulture difficult.
While Catherine and Pierre work together in the vines and the cellar for all the Breton wines, the Vouvrays are Catherine’s pet project (along with the Bourgueil Dilettante below). The wine comes from 40-year old Chenin Blanc vines planted in flinty soil. A very gentle pressing is followed by a short vinification in stainless steel. There is no malolactic fermentation and the wine is bottled in the spring following harvest. Made for immediate consumption.

Elegant bouquet of flowers and fruit underpinned by a light vanilla note. Perfumed on the palate and with subtle smoothness, it also reveals the elegance of the very rare Beaune white wines.
Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Pere & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, perpetuating tradition for over 280 years and 9 generations. In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyards in Volnay in the famous “Les Caillerets” climat and started to develop the family’s vineyard holdings. During the French Revolution, property belonging to the clergy and nobility was confiscated and put up for sale. Joseph’s son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, seized the opportunity to extend the family’s vineyard holdings in Beaune including the famous “Beaune Greves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus.” This desire to build up an exceptional estate in Cote d’Or endured through the generations and acquisitions in the best Villages were added throughout the 19th century and again in the early 20th century.

Steve dreamt of farming his entire life. He became an obsessed gardener and cook while studying philosophy in college. In 1994, while back in grad school for horticulture after three years as a bike messenger/wannabe farmer, he found a job in vineyards and orchards working for a small sustainable agriculture consulting firm. In 1999 he co-authored the California manual on sustainable vineyard practices. In 2002 he started consulting on vineyard practices in Napa. He still loves the challenge of solving vineyard problems for others, but since 2003 the primary focus has been on his own family farming and winemaking. Steve is a life-long student of the craft of viticulture.

Natural It's rare when we get to try a wine we've never imagined before, yet here it is! This is a Chablis fermented and aged on its skins in clay Amphora for a full year! The resulting wine is deep gold in color. The profile actually has some of the expected Chablis notes of almond and hazelnut, but other, deeper notes like ginger, and apricot jam are present as well. The palate has loads of minerality, fine tannins, and a very persistent finish. Awesome Chablis that will upset the traditionalists!

The Andre Clouet Grand Cru Reserve NV is 100% Pinot Noir, and entirely from the village of Bouzy. Apple butter, scones, marzipan, orange peel, granny smith, clay, and some baking spices towards nutmeg and clove. The palate is more moderate in weight with golden apples, some clotted cream, and a light hit of citrus. A touch lighter than the last time we put this forth in a club, but still showing quite a bit of Pinot character. D&M Tasting Notes

Karthauserhof Riesling Trocken 2018Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00
Varietal: Riesling Trocken
The historic Karthäuserhof estate is located just before the confluence of the Ruwer and Mosel rivers, nestled along a side valley adjacent to the small village of Eitelsbach. Recent findings indicate that the spot was a settlement practicing viticulture as early as Roman times. Named Karthäuserhof, or “Farm of the Carthusians,” it was founded officially as a Carthusian monastery in the 11th century.
In 1811, Napoleon secularized the region and the property was auctioned off in Paris. It was bought by Valentin Leonardy and, miraculously, through the trials and tribulations of over 200 years, has remained in the same family. The Tyrells inherited Karthäuserhof in the mid-20th century with their eldest son, Christoph, running all operations in the vineyard and cellar until 2012. 2015 marked the beginning of a new period in the estate’s history, as Ludwig Breiling, the legendary winemaker behind the successful 1990s and outstanding vintages of 2000 – 2009, returned from his absence to oversee all work in the winery and vineyards.
The 19 hectares of vineyards are planted almost entirely to Riesling on original rootstock. While the estate produces the classic Prädikat wines, they have long been ahead of the curve and renowned for their dry Rieslings, an area of increasing popularity among Riesling lovers.

Sierra Madre Vineyard is situated on a sandy, south-facing slope, and produces a wine that is concentrated, decadent and complex. The wine’s flamboyant attributes of richness and lusciousness are balanced by an acidic tension culminating with a long, velvety-textured finish.
95 points Jeb Dunnuck:
“From a site in the Santa Maria Valley brought up in 22% new French oak, the 2016 Chardonnay Sierra Madre Vineyard offers more minerality as well as an obvious salinity in its orchard fruits, crushed rocks, poached pear, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Deep, rich, and medium to full-bodied, it’s certainly another brilliant Chardonnay from this estate.”
93 points Antonio Galloni:
“The 2016 Chardonnay Sierra Madre Vineyard is gracious, airy and very delicate. Orchard fruit, mint and floral notes are all layered in a Chardonnay that encapsulates the essence of Santa Maria Valley in its understated class.”
